“No person in the United States, shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance.” Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972, and its implementing regulation at 34 C.F.R. Part 106 (Title IX).
The University of Tennessee is a recipient of Federal financial assistance for education activities, and in accordance with the provisions of the Education Amendments Act of 1972, all of its education programs and activities are subject to the prohibition of Title IX of that act against discrimination on the basis of gender. Additionally, in 1998, the Tennessee General Assembly passed Public Chapter 758, which requires that each state government entity subject to Title IX develop a Title IX implementation plan annually, and submit it to the state Comptroller’s office. This plan reflects the guidelines set forth in the document, “Without Regard to Gender,” produced by the Office of Education Accountability. The University’s state required Title IX Plan is produced by the Office of Equity and Diversity.
The University’s Deputy Title IX Coordinator for the Office of Equity and Diversity is Jennifer L. Richter, Associate Vice Chancellor and Director, Office of Equity and Diversity, 1840 Melrose Avenue, Knoxville, TN, 37996. Telephone: 865-974-2498.
University policy prohibits discrimination on the basis of gender in any education program or activity. Complaints of a violation of this policy may be directed to the Title IX Coordinator. Complaints will be addressed following the University’s discrimination complaint procedure. Other questions, concerns or inquiries may also be addressed through the Title IX Coordinator.
